Richard R. Boesel, M.D.

Personal Statment One of my main areas of interest is in the evaluation and treatment of incontinence. I have been helping women overcome their problems with bladder leakage for over 11 years.

I am the director of the 'Incontinence Center' at University Hospital in Charlotte, NC. I also run the 'Incontinence Center' in our office. I am a member of the American Uro-gynecologic Society as well as the International Continence society. Incontinence is a very common problem in women of all ages. However, most women accept it as part of the aging process or something that normally occurs as a result of having children. There are multiple reasons that a woman may have or develop incontinence. There are three main types of incontinence-Stress, Urge and Overflow. Each of these is treated differently. There are usually several different options for treating incontinence. It is a myth that only surgery works to treat these conditions. Surgery is only useful for some types of 'stress' incontinence. There are usually several different "non-surgical" treatments that are effective. One of the most exciting is the use of biofeedback (computer assisted) pelvic floor muscle training. This is an office technique, painless, risk free and effective in 75-80% of patients.
