As the transition from childhood to adulthood,
adolescence is a time of great change, not only physical but also
emotional, in young women. While this is a wonderfully exciting
time of self-discovery for most, you may have difficulty with the
numerous challenges and decisions you face.
In an effort to exert your independence, you may feel you need
to experiment with high-risk behaviors including:
- early initiation of sexual activity
- poor use of contraception for protection against
unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases
- cigarette smoking, alcohol and illicit drug
use
- driving while under the influence of alcohol
or other drugs
- and poor nutritional habits
While the physicians at Greater Carolinas Women's Center encourage
open communication between teens and their parents, we are here
to help facilitate a healthy transition to adulthood.
While abstinence is the only sure way to prevent pregnancies and
sexually transmitted diseases, a variety of contraceptive choices
are available. We can help guide young women to make safe and effective
choices and assist in the prevention and early treatment of sexually
transmitted diseases. Please refer to the Birth Control Options
for additional information about how to protect yourself.
We know that there are many questions adolescents have about the
changes that they are experiencing both physically and emotionally.
We are also available to personally help guide you through this
both wonderful and frightening time in your life. Rest assured that
all visits are confidential and no information can be released unless
you authorize it.
